John Dramani Mahama has made history by becoming the first president under Ghana’s Fourth Republic to lose an election and reclaim the seat after two subsequent contests.
He was sworn in as Ghana’s president for a second term on January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra. The ceremony was presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Mahama previously served as president from January 7, 2013, to January 6, 2017. His return to the presidency marks a significant moment in Ghana’s democratic journey. Notably, he secured a landslide victory in the 2024 elections, defeating incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.¹
The swearing-in ceremony also witnessed the oath-taking of Ghana’s first female Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The event was attended by dignitaries from across Ghana and the world, celebrating this historic moment.
