Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has issued a stern warning to illegal miners operating in forest reserves and water bodies within the Ashanti Region .
They have two weeks to vacate the areas or face the law. This move aims to curb the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which has caused widespread deforestation, pollution, and destruction of farmlands.¹
The government’s ultimatum demonstrates its commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable development. Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council will deploy a team to enforce the directive and halt mining activities in protected areas.
Dr. Amoakohene also discussed the region’s development roadmap, covering infrastructure, economic growth, unemployment, and other critical issues. His commitment to promoting good governance and engaging with the people of the region is evident in his efforts to address the challenges facing the Ashanti Region.
